Syd - Yea. I'd also say Del Piero, Pirlo Italy, Ballack, Germany.
Alonso has also been a great player.

A long list from Germany to be fair, not surprising they have won the WC so many times.
As well as those mentioned you could just as easily add in.
Klinsman, Matthaus, Lahm, Rummenigge, Kahn.

Crassus - I did think of him but I just can't include a keeper as the best to come out of a country.

Personally think zoff was much better than buffon, even though that sounds ridiculous, as buffon is a legend and one of the greatest keepers of all time.
Remember a period when he was unbeatable for italy.
I asked an old juve fan and he tells me Gianni rivera (milan) is the best playmakers in history. Must admit I'd never heard of him.
Iniesta and beckenbauer incredible players, but with the Kaiser being before my time, I'd also plump for matteus. Fucker was quality.
